TikTok Content Creators Driving Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Medication

An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss medications is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, based on recent findings.

Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Online

The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Viewers are urged to message these accounts directly for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Commerce on Social Networks

Separately, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Express Concerns

However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.

Some professionals said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Selling the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several content creators attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or prison.

Service Reaction and Material Removal

Based on the social media company, the platform has removed violative content and prohibited related keywords and query recommendations. The organization stated it was dedicated to keeping the service secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Digital Marketplace Operations

Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 participants marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of users, filled with photos of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or administering at residence.

Within moments of entering one community, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The vendor provided an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Within these groups, posts show black plastic packages with postal service labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a pen should last, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Actions

A representative for the messaging service stated it actively monitored harmful content on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Warnings

“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not include what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the increase in interest to current price rises for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her staff has previously seen patients harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Position

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially significant health risks”.
