This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but inside Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
