New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
