Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
