Lackluster Oracle Earnings Report Erase Over $70bn Off Market Value, Stoking AI Bubble Anxiety.

The tech firm's underwhelming quarterly results have erased over $70bn from the value of the software and data company co-founded by billionaire Larry Ellison, intensifying escalating concerns of a hype cycle in artificial intelligence stocks.

Sharp Share Price Fall Comes After Sales Miss

Shares in the firm tumbled by over 11 percent overnight after it posted a disappointing 14% growth in revenues to $16 billion in the previous quarter, while simultaneously announced plans to boost its AI spending by around $15 billion.

The business reported weaker-than-expected quarterly revenues for the period ending in November, with sales at its key cloud computing business expanding at a slower pace than anticipated, at 34 percent.

Market Concerns Over Spending and Debt

Investors were also let down by a more moderate 68% growth in revenues from its infrastructure business.

Concurrently, the market were alarmed by the company's elevated forecasts for spending on artificial intelligence. It now projects capex to jump by 40% to $50 billion, with the lion's share of the increase allocated for constructing cloud infrastructure.

This heavy spending plan comes amid a increasing debt pile, with Oracle's corporate debt having increased by twenty-five percent over the past year to reach $99.9bn.

"Frankly, the report was not dramatically bad, but it served to reinforce fears around substantial AI spending, funded through debt, with an unclear timeframe for returns," noted a market analyst.

Broader Sector Repercussions and Ecosystem Concerns

Continued optimism about the potential of AI technology has led to a sharp rise in stock prices in recent months, but there has been a growing spate of warnings from regulators and executives who warn stock market valuations could tumble if investors become disappointed by the development or adoption of AI technology.

While Oracle has become an important technology provider creating software for large firms worldwide and has in recent years found strength in the cloud sector, there are increasing questions about how reliant firms are growing on circular funding within the artificial intelligence industry.

Oracle said that its metric of remaining performance obligations jumped by 440% over the past year. However, market watchers were wary when it was revealed that these commitments were propelled by new commitments from other tech giants like Meta and Amazon.

"Although these are high-quality customers, it will not placate fears that big tech's AI investments are interdependent, which leaves it susceptible to a loss of investor confidence," observed a market strategist.

"In summary, robust backlog increase was not enough to alleviate fears about AI and the enormous amount of capital expenditure needed by companies to construct AI capacity."

Ripple Effect in Tech Shares

Additional technology stocks subsequently fell in extended trading following the Oracle report. Key performers included:

  • Nvidia: Share price fell by 1.3%.
  • Alphabet (Google): Stock dropped by 0.3 percent.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the AI investor shares plunged by 7.7% on Thursday.
