EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
