Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a diverse cast of personalities, and a exciting storyline featuring divine entities, fiends, and sinister influences expanding in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Revealing details for Episode 3 of the new season are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

The latest chapter ended with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of adventurers who will split off from the primary party to embark on their own adventure, apart from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team consists of Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (the cast member), the cleric (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Considering a large ensemble, it was evident from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be unworkable.

Hence, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Planners, and Explorers.

What Defines the Warrior Group

As described by the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for participants who enjoy a typically action-packed battle-oriented gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might seem out of place, but the developments of episode 3 make it clear why these five characters are best suited for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

First, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a intense opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose death initiated the story’s plot—exploited the foes for his own means, invading the secret base, striking Thimble, and stealing all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The traitor then paid off his debts and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, above the urban center, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each adventurer has a individual motive to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the companion and best friend, seeks vengeance.
  • Kattigan has experience in the northern area and advises that it is a dangerous location.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having disobeyed his house’s orders to execute the target and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their position as important members in House Halovar could assist the group reach places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, Teor pledged a eternal obligation to The cleric for his deliverance and will now go with him wherever.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the authorities that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and The healer defied House Halovar and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the family.

This results in them few options but to head to Timmony in pursuit of the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

From episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the combat party will not appear next week, leaving the remaining eight participants to assemble the Explorers and Planners parties.

Fans can anticipate learning which players will be in which group in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, streaming live on October 24.
