Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
